I. The Role of the Edinburg Convention & Visitors Bureau
The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce was created in 1932 to lead the effort in advancing commerce and the quality of life in Edinburg and the region. In April 2001 the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved a motion allowing a divisional name change from the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce - Tourism Division to what's now called the Edinburg Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Hidalgo County is the location of twenty-six municipalities and has a population of nearly 543,000. Geographically, the county ranges, from farm lands and pasturelands to busy city landscapes. The county is served by HWY 281 (future I-69), HWY 83 and numerous state highways. It is also the home of University of Texas-Pan American.

The scenic beauty and the abundant natural resources, with near by water-ways, South Padre Island and shopping in Mexico attract visitors to our area. Edinburg is the first major city visitors see when entering the Rio Grande Valley as they come in from HWY 281. The natural setting and the quality of life gives Edinburg an advantage of untapped tourism potential.

Primary funding for the Edinburg Convention & Visitors Bureau is through an overnight accommodations tax in the City of Edinburg. The city approved annual budget is set every fiscal year which runs October 1st through September 30th. Other income is derived through state assistance programs when available, and cooperative marketing programs.

The responsibility of the Edinburg Chamber/CVB operation rests within an eighteen member Board of Directors. The Chamber's operation is guided by a set of bylaws and policies that are developed by the Board of Directors and implemented by the President and the Chamber/CVB staff. The Chamber/CVB staff is comprised of six full-time paid positions which include President, Director of Tourism, Director of Marketing, Director of Membership, Executive Assistant and a receptionist.

In addition to many projects that we must do on a daily basis to stay competitive in the marketplace, the Chamber/CVB will continue to develop and innovative such projects and programs.

  • Tourism Marketing: Major emphasis will be placed on efforts to attract more interest from markets; Winter Texan's, Wholesale Tour Market, Motor-Coach, Travel Agents and Nature Tourism.
